Virginia Tech student killed 32 people on campus on April 16, 2007
At the time it was the deadliest shooting in U.S. history.
MONROE, La. (KNOE) - One of the deadliest shootings in U.S. history occurred on April 16, 2007. A 23-year-old undergraduate student at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia killed 5 teachers and 27 students in a shooting spree.
Seung-Hui Cho began the attacks at West Ambler Johnston Hall, a dormitory. He entered with two semi-automatic pistols and killed two people.
Cho continued on to the classrooms at Norris Hall. After chaining the main entrance doors shut, he fired into four classrooms and a stairwell. Thirty people were killed, 17 were wounded.
As police stormed Norris Hall, Cho took his own life, shooting himself in the head.
At the time it was the deadliest shooting in U.S. history. The incident triggered debates about campus security procedures, gun laws, and mental health. Campuses across the country re-evaluated security procedures after the tragedy.
