MONROE, La. (KNOE) - The National Association of Letter Carriers’ 34th annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive is coming up on Saturday, May 9.

Event organizers say Stamp Out Hunger is the largest one-day food drive event in the country, and our local drive will benefit the Food Bank of Northeast Louisiana.

They say this food drive also comes at a critical time as food banks are in need of donations to help families, children and seniors through the upcoming summer months.

“This is an easy and convenient way to donate food during this time of need,” said Executive Director of the Food Bank of Northeast Louisiana Jean Toth. “People can leave their food donation by their mailbox and letter carriers will collect and transport the food for us. It’s a wonderful way to help a local family or senior.”

Local letter carriers will begin distributing donation bags to residents across Northeast Louisiana this week.

Residents are asked to put non-perishable food items into the bag and place the bag near their mailbox prior to mail delivery on Saturday, May 9 - donations will be picked up when mail is delivered on this day only.

They say the food bank will then distribute donations to those in need.

“Stamp Out Hunger gives us an opportunity to help those in our community who need a meal,” said USPS Letter Carrier Jimmie Drummer. “This is how we can give back to the people we serve.”

Residents who do not receive a bag can still donate food by filing their own bag for their carrier or by dropping donations off at the Food Bank of Northeast Louisiana’s office in Monroe during regular business hours.
