SHOT DOWN: House torpedoes resolution to limit Trump’s war powers
Republicans block measure requiring congressional approval for military operations
WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - The House voted Thursday to reject a resolution that would have required congressional approval before the president could conduct future military operations in Iran.
Republicans defeated the measure as the conflict in Iran extends from days into what could be weeks. The Senate rejected a similar War Powers Resolution Wednesday, 47-53.
Republicans back Trump’s authority
Rep. John McGuire, R-Va., said he supports the president’s ability to act independently.
“As commander in chief, he has to be able to make decisions that keep our troops safe and Americans at home and abroad safe,” McGuire said.
Democrats raise constitutional concerns
Rep. Val Hoyle, D-Ore., said the administration has sidelined Congress throughout its tenure.
“Look, we’ve seen this throughout the entire time of this particular administration. They have decided that Congress is irrelevant and Republican leadership have, especially in the House, have just rolled over and let them do it,” Hoyle said.
Hoyle also drew a comparison to past military justifications.
“So this is like the weapons of mass destruction story all over again. That was false then. But that administration at least took the time to spin the story and get people to believe it,” Hoyle said.
Congress has declared war 11 times, with the last declaration coming in 1942.
