BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Louisiana residents are being urged to check for unclaimed money that they may be owed.

According to Louisiana State Treasurer John Flemming, the state’s unclaimed property program paid out more than $69 million so far during the 2025 fiscal year. That is the highest amount that was paid out to residents since the 2021 fiscal year.

Currently, the program has $1.2 billion that you may be owed.

“One in six individuals in Louisiana has unclaimed property, with claims averaging $900.” State Treasurer John Flemming said. “It is your money; we want you to claim it.”

The unclaimed property is often money that businesses turn over in unclaimed cash, stocks, bonds, securities, and insurance proceeds to the Louisiana State Treasurer’s Office, officials said. They added that one of the main reasons that an item becomes unclaimed property is an incorrect or old address.

According to the Louisiana State Treasurer’s Office, unclaimed property can also include old bank accounts, payroll checks, royalties, interest payments, utility deposits, stock certificates, and life insurance proceeds.

In addition to individuals, businesses, non-profit groups, estates, and government entities may also be owed money.

“It’s firewalled against the state,” explained Fleming. “Nobody can touch this money but the rightful owner of it. If you don’t claim it, then it’ll go to your heir, and if they don’t claim it, it may just sit there.”

All Louisiana residents are urged to visit the LaCashClaim.org website to search and see whether they have unclaimed property.

“People should take us seriously, and we’re happy to give their money to them,” said Fleming. “If you’re worried that this is some type of scam, just simply call us and we’ll be happy to verify it for you.”
