MONROE, La. (KNOE) - College enrollment has taken a major hit due to COVID-19.

According to Louisiana Delta Community College Interim Chancellor Chris Broadwater, enrollment at two-year schools has dropped 11% statewide. Broadwater pointed to the pandemic as the main factor to the decline.

“Across higher education in general nationally, you are seeing an impact as everything has been impacted as a result of the pandemic,” said Broadwater.

Broadwater noted the average age for a student at a two-year institution is 28.

He says that dynamic presents a difficult but yet understandable challenge between choosing to pay for school, or pay for necessities.

“Unfortunately what we are seeing are that there are some students whom there might not be any out of pocket expenses to come to Louisiana Delta Community College, but it still cannot take priority right now. There priority is on finding another job that they already have a credential for or taking care of their children or taking care of their household first,” said Broadwater.

But in order to see an economic rebound and return things to somewhat normal, Broadwater says schools like LDCC will play a vital role.

“The only way you’re going to be able to move nimbly and respond to what the economy needs today is to do it quickly and the two year schools are equipped to do it to do that. They are critical for our community and nation in the upcoming days,” said Broadwater.

And before you count yourself out, Broadwater urges people to have a talk with an official at your desired school.

“We often say folks who come to us they are looking to get a piece of paper, but it’s not the diploma. They’re looking at getting that first pay check that changes their life and changes the economic outlook for them and their family for generations to come,” said Broadwater.

The registration window for the fall semester at Louisiana Delta Community College is still open. For more information you can visit the school’s website, or call their office at 318.345.9000.
