Mother passed out from alcohol as toddler sat barely conscious in smoke-filled home, police say

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AZFamily/Gray News) — An Arizona woman got drunk and fell asleep while her home filled with smoke, according to court documents. Her toddler was then found barely conscious inside.

Kallien Heathman’s ex-boyfriend called police after he arrived at the Sierra Street home around 11 p.m. on Aug. 1 and found the 25-year-old woman unconscious on the floor near a couch, with a 2-year-old in a car seat inside the house.

Officers arrived and entered the house. The living room was filled with smoke. Police said the child was barely conscious and not moving. They got the child out of the house first.

As officers tried to get Heathman out of the house, she woke up and started to resist their help, court documents said.

Officers later learned the smoke came from a burned pizza in the microwave.

A 7-year-old child was also at the home at the time, but was not hurt.

Heathman and the toddler were taken to the hospital to be evaluated. Investigators said her blood alcohol content was 0.379.

Heathman was booked into jail on one count of child abuse. A judge set her bond at $10,000.
