WINNSBORO, La. (KNOE) - Fertilizer and fuel prices are rising due to the recent war in Iran.

LSU Ag Center Soil Fertility Specialist Dr. Leo Vieira says this has created challenges for farmers especially for those planting corn.

“We’ve got to apply urea or other; we’ve got to apply nitrogen, and if you’re applying less nitrogen, you’re going to likely have a lower yield,” said Vieira. “So that’s definitely the greatest impact. The production is going to go, is going to decrease.”

While he says corn has received the most impact, cattle farmers and other crops like soy beans have been impacted as well. He hopes farmers will prepare for possible challenges like this in the coming years.

“Now would be a great time to be diligent in terms of fertilizer application,” said Vieira. “Trying to apply the right rate by doing a soil test. Trying to apply at the right time so to make sure you’re not applying too late or too early so your cropping can make the best use of that fertilizer.”
