MONROE, La. (KNOE) - Nutritionist Jen Avis tells us about the nutritional facts of a typical holiday dinner, and offers some healthier alternatives.

The typical holiday dinner is made up of:

  • Slice of Ham
  • Slice of Turkey
  • Cornbread Dressing/Giblet Gravy
  • Green Peas
  • Sweet Potato Casserole
  • Roll/Butter
  • Cranberry Sauce
  • Ambrosia Salad
  • Slice Pecan Pie

Avis says the typical holiday meal has around 1,998 calories, with about 229 grams of carbohydrates and more than 2,000 Mg of sodium.

She offers healthier sweet potato casserole recipes, one topped with pecans and the other topped with marshmallows.

They can be made in a 9 x 13 casserole pan to give you eight servings. Each serving will have around 280 – 350 calories per serving and around 60 – 75 gm carbs.
