PAWS NELA suspends spay and neuter assistance program, still offering other pet resources
MONROE, La. (KNOE) - PAWS of Northeast Louisiana is continuing to serve pet owners after having to suspend their spay/neuter assistance program during the pandemic.
For the past sixteen years, PAWS of NELA has been offering spay/neuter assistance to low-income pet owners through their program. They have had to suspend the program through the end of the year due to lack of funding and private donations.
PAWS NELA is currently accepting donations so the program can resume in 2021.
Other programs that are still active include shelter pet rescue, low-cost pet tags, and pet therapy. But since the pandemic began, they are no longer able to bring their pet therapy services into assisted living facilities. Spay/Neuter Director Staci Choate said as businesses reopen, she is hoping this will change. But for now, they are still available to clients in other ways.
“PAWS is still active, we’re still here. We’re still trying our best to help clients and pets here in Northeast Louisiana. We’re not planning on going anywhere. We are ready to get back at it as soon as possible,” said Choate.
Choate said she realizes there’s a need for spay/neuter services. Even though PAWS cannot fulfill that need at this time, there are other low-cost services available in Lafayette, Shreveport, and Richland, Mississippi.
