Arkansas pharmacy burglary leaves one dead, 2 behind bars

STRONG, Ar. (KNOE 8 News) - A burglary at a pharmacy in Strong, Arkansas has left one man dead and two behind bars. It’s also left police in Monroe are looking into a possible connection with the recent string of burglaries here.

Police responded to an alarm at Newsom's Pharmacy in early Thursday morning to find a burglary in process. When a deputy arrived on the scene he found the front glass door of the pharmacy was broken out. After further investigation he found 36-year-old Artago Damon Howard inside the store.

We’re told that's when a struggle ensued for control of the deputy's weapon, and it went off, shooting Howard.

Police say Howard continued to try to escape, but the deputy finally restrained him, and noticed the injury. Howard died at the scene and his body was transported to the Arkansas State Crime Lab.

Police also arrested 35-year-old Marcus Lawson and 36-year-old Robert Hill, both of Monroe, in connection to the burglary.

Arkansas State Police do have an open investigation into the incident at the request of Union County Sheriffs.

The name of the deputy is not yet being released, nor is the status of his job.

Lawson's bail is set at $250-thousand dollars, and Hill's is set at $100-thousand. Both are facing burglary charges.
