The type of pedigree usually means the Louisiana heavyweight will take on all comers.

Who can forget what happened in 2000?

When mighty Midland Lee, fresh off two state titles, dared to play with West Monroe, and limped home with a loss to the eventual national champion.

This week, the Rebels have another date with a Texas state champion. Longview is fresh off their first state title in 81 years.

Meanwhile, across Northeast Louisiana, Union handles win-less Rayville. West Ouachita stays unbeaten with a win over Vidalia. Richwood takes it over a very young Franklin Parish squad.

The season has featured a few great surprises. Unbeaten Bastrop is at the top of the list. This week, Rams hand Carroll its first loss, while Mangham stays undefeated in a shootout versus Lakeside.

Victory celebrations have become the norm for Neville against Ouachita. The Tigers have not lost to the Lions since 2010. Neville's suffocating defense will prove too much for the Lions.

We have an intriguing matchup between Jena and Ouachita Christian. The Giants thumped the Eagles in a jamboree last year. Trelon Jones is back and better than ever, but the Eagles make a defensive stand late to win the game.

Oak Grove versus Sterlington will be a slobber knocker. Panthers will be out to settle a score after their six-point loss last season. Dallas Reagor will take home a late Panthers' score to bring home the Mayor's Cup.

Friday night, the Rebels will leave the friendly confines of West Monroe for Independence Stadium in Shreveport. It's truly a neutral site for this showdown. Longview won in 2005. West Monroe got revenge in 2006.

Texas A&M Haynes King is ranked as the second-best dual-threat quarterback in the country and has Jerry Arledge's attention. With ULM commit Garrett Kahmann out for a few more weeks, the Rebels are still working on their offensive identity. The Lobos' "D" has theirs. They have pitched back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 1985.

The Rebels will make it interesting, but the Lobos are too strong, and win by four.
