WINN PARISH, La. (KNOE) - Authorities say a Louisiana woman was killed in a crash in Winn Parish on Monday.

According to Louisiana State Police, the crash happened around 12:15 p.m. on LA Hwy 34 east of Joyce. They say 78-year-old Martha W. Stone, of Sikes, was heading east on Hwy 34 when she lost control of her car, ran off the road, and hit a tree. She died at the scene. Police say she was not wearing her seatbelt. The crash is still under investigation. Routine toxicology tests are pending.

Police add:

"Louisiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind/inform motorists that properly wearing your seat belt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. We ask you to take one second to “buckle up!” Louisiana law requires that every person in a vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Not wearing a seat belt remains the leading cause of death in motor vehicle crashes.

"In 2018, Troop E has investigated 46 fatal crashes resulting in 50 deaths."
