West Monroe has been awarded over $4 million in grant money to fix flooding issues in the city.

West Monroe Mayor Staci Mitchell said there are three different projects for which the grant money will be used.

1. Improving and widening the Black Bayou Basin Canal.

2. Increasing the pumping capacity of city pumps by the river.

3. Acquiring flood-prone properties to use for city detention and greenway projects.

Mitchell said these projects should decrease flood levels by two and a half feet. She also said they could have bigger implications for the city.

"I think it will definitely enhance our neighborhood revitalization projects, our economic growth efforts, our quality of life. I mean it's just going to be an overall improvement to the city to not have the flood issues as we've had in the past," she said.

The mayor said the city has already started designs for the canal plans, and she hopes to see construction start by the end of next year.
