WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE) - One person has been arrested during an investigation into a suspicious death in West Monroe.
According to West Monroe PD, they discovered the body at 103 Riverbend Drive in West Monroe. This area is near the Ouachita River, just south of Interstate 20.
Police say they were contacted about the death Monday morning at 8:51 a.m. They say their initial investigation led them to believe " suspicious circumstances were present." Police say that during their investigation, they found multiple cuts on the victim. At this time, the investigation shows that the cuts were made after the victim died. Police arrested Shomari Clemons on a charge of mutilating, disinterring human remains.
According to an arrest affidavit for Clemons, the deceased had a cut to her left wrist and several suspicious marks on her thighs. Clemons told police that when he learned of his grandmother's death, he went into her room and began to shake her and manipulate the body. He could not say how the deceased received the cuts, but he did tell police that he studied how to make cuts similar to the one on her arm while at LSU studying to mummify chickens.
Family members told KNOE that the deceased died of natural causes. However, police are still investigating. The body is being sent for an autopsy to determine whether the deceased was killed by someone or did, in fact, die of natural causes.
