ULM athletes pitch in for the cause

MONROE, LA (KNOE)- The University of Louisiana at Monroe's student athletes are getting the word out about their go fund me account.
Softball player Cheyanne Lyon helped out with the the PSA that's helping them do it.
She said the message here is clear.

"Anything helps, and we just really encourage people to do that. And, we send our hearts out to those effected," Lyons said.

The Student Athlete Advisory Committee teamed up with 11 other schools in the Sun-Belt Conference.
They all returned to school wanting to help.

"Everyone goes through hard times and you never know when it's going to be yours," Lyons said.

The students aren't playing any games when it comes to helping, either.
In less than a week, they've raised more than $6,000.

Their goal is $10,000.

"It's pretty amazing to see these student athletes take charge. And, they are really, really wanting to do something-not only for their institutions, but their community," Lisa Varytimidis, student athlete advisor, said.

Lyon said she has some teammates who are from the Houston area.
Which is another reason why this cause is so important to her.

"We're really just trying to be there for our teammates, and there for those people who are going through this. And it's really tough. They can't really do anything about it right now," Lyons said.

Some students and faculty who were here last march know what it means to recover a fumble.

"It's our turn. And here we are again," said Varytimidis.
