LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - Lousiana State Police say two men from Texas are now dead after attempting to jump the ramp on the Black Bayou Bridge this morning.

Trooper Derick Senegal says troopers responded to a call about a single vehicle crash on Big Lake Road on Black Bayou Bridge at 2:00 a.m. this morning, May 24, 2019.

After an initial investigation it was revealed that the driver had been traveling south along Big Lake Road in a 2016 Chevrolet Cruze when they reached the pontoon bridge that had been closed to allow a boat to pass.

According to a witness the car’s passenger exited the vehicle and pushed the gate arm up allowing the driver to drive under the arm and pick the passenger up before moving towards the ramp at the end of the bridge.

After stopping briefly, the driver put the vehicle in reverse and then drove forward trying to jump the ramp.

The vehicle fell short of the other end of the bridge landing in the water before sinking.

The driver was unable to get out of the vehicle and the passenger’s body was found outside the submerged vehicle. Both were pronounced dead at the scene by the Calcasieu Parish Coroner’s Office.

State Police say toxicology samples have been obtained and will be submitted for analysis.

The identities of the deceased have not been released so that next of kin can be notified.

In 2016, a man attempted to jump the bridge during a police chase.
