MONROE, La. (Press Release) - The Fabulous Equinox Orchestra makes a tour stop in Monroe Friday with a performance at Brown Auditorium at the University of Louisiana Monroe.
For band leaders Jeremy Davis and Clay Johnson it’s a personal experience.
“There’s something very special about being at home. We started 15 years ago in Monroe,” said Davis in a phone interview from the orchestra’s customized travel bus. They were in Minneapolis, Minn., as part of a tour that’s crisscrossing the country.
Davis and Johnson are Ouachita Parish boys who grew up performing together.
“We started in Monroe 15 years ago,” said Davis. “As soon as Howard Shaft (their first band), ran its course, actually before it was over, we started Equinox at Sixth Street (bar) with a little jazz trio.”
Today’s Equinox is far from a jazz trio. It’s a full orchestra with a range of songs and arrangements Davis said has evolved into the band being “known as uniquely Southern. Part of the DNA of the band is Southern and that is what we are.”
Equinox started with a Big Band style which gives them a foundation sound like no other. Take that foundation and mix it with jazz, blues, Texas swing, West Coast swing, rock and roll and even a touch of country and you’ve got a one-of-a-kind experience.
“We’ve got an amazing selection of difference genres,” he said. “We love all kinds of music. For us to do all that music with the orchestra, so far as we know, nobody else is doing it.”
A VIP reception will be in the ULM Sculpture Garden beginning at 6:15 p.m. Friday with hors d’oeuvres, beverages and visiting with orchestra members. The tickets are $75 and include preferred seating.
General admission tickets are $35. Tickets are available on the Equinox Orchestra website, http://equinoxorchestra.com or at The Radio People, 1109 Hudson Lane, 324-1500.
