WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE) - Sherrie and Dennis Jones are celebrating the holidays with a special family member, their adoptive daughter Cricket. The couple took Cricket in almost 10 years ago.
West Monroe family is celebrating nearly ten years of adopting daughter into the family.
"I think God sent her to us," Sherrie said. "We knew nothing about foster care. We knew nothing about the legal system when it came to children and adoption."
Sherrie said a simple phone call pushed them to learn all they needed about the foster care system. Luckily, she says, their process was not as complicated as it can get.
"It's been the best thing that's ever happened to us," Sherrie said. "It was something we weren't expecting."
Cricket said one of her favorite things to do with her family is pack up and hit the road.
"I get to hang out with my family, and my sisters spoil me," Cricket said
"For almost ten years old, has probably been to more states and has been to more areas then 90 percent of the adults I know," Sherrie added.
Because of couples like Sherrie and Dennis, Louisiana continues to break records for adoption. The Department of Children and Family Services says more than 900 children have found permanent homes this year.
This family is encouraging others who are considering adoption to take the first step in that direction.
"There are children out there to be adopted," Sherrie said. "You have to have an open mind and an open heart."
Cricket, on the other hand, is motivating children in foster care to keep strong.
"Keep hanging on, and you'll find a family that'll take good care of you," Cricket said.
