A storage tank caught fire in Monroe Friday afternoon, sending a billowing pillar of smoke into the air.

It happened behind the DOTD building on Desiard Street around one o'clock.

Monroe fire officials say someone was trying to cut an empty tank with a cutting torch when it caught fire. The amount of smoke alarmed nearby residents and drivers on Desiard Street, busy with lunchtime traffic.

Officials say asphalt residue contributed to the amount of smoke.

They say the fire was put out in 15 minutes.

No injuries were reported.
