Some are calling for event center to shut down following recent shooting

MONROE, La. (KNOE) - The sounds of gunshots and people screaming isn't sitting well with some in the community.

"There is another tape where you can hear 5 or 6 shots at one time," Marie Brown, a concerned citizen said.

Brown played a video of the shooting that was taken during a party at an event building on Christmas Day. It sent several people to the hospital.

"Children were sending this video out {they were} 14 to 17," Brown said.

This isn't the first time folks have called for the place to shut its doors. The community and city leaders complained about loud noise after a nearby shooting last year when it was Club Nuvvo.

That's when police beefed up patrols in the area.

"But, it was taking a lot of time from our officers working other parts of the city when a lot of activities were going on at Club Nuvvo at that time," Councilman Kenneth Wilson (District 4) said.

Councilman Kenneth Wilson said that wasn't enough, which is why he said the council voted to take away its liquor license this year. The name was changed to Mojo Event Center.

"No alcohol. No BYOB. It's suppose to be a place for kids to have fun and cut off at a certain time," Wilson said.

A fun night out turned into a shootout, which might result in a Plan B.

"I'll be the first one to say if we need to shut it down and the citizens say we need to shut it down. Certainly, that's what we'll do," Wilson said.

Wilson said it would take three votes to take away its occupancy license. KNOE did try, unsuccessfully, to get in touch with the property owner.

No word yet.
