(CNN) - Sen. John Kennedy responded to remarks he made about Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday night, in which he said, "I don’t mean any disrespect, but it must suck to be that dumb," when talking about the impeachment proceedings.

Kennedy made the comment during a Trump campaign rally in Monroe after saying, “In three short years, President Trump has doubled the growth in the greatest economy in all of human history."
A reporter later asked Kennedy if he really meant "no disrespect" when making the comment.
"Sure I did," Kennedy replied. "Let me tell you why I said that in part what Speaker Pelosi has done here. And I think she's the prime principle behind this impeachment. I think she has got to be careful what you ask for. And I understand immediate gratification and understand animal spirits. And I understand that politics is not beanbag. But I think what she has started here is going to elevate partisan impeachment, so that henceforth, when we have a new president, and we will have a Democratic president someday, Republicans are going to feel obligated to impeach the Democratic president because they don't agree with his or her politics. And I don't think that's right. I just don't think that's right.
"I understand that there are those who think that President Trump should be impeached. I disagree with them. But I don't think that any fair-minded person can disagree with the proposition that so far, and I think this will continue to be, a partisan impeachment. 13 months before the American people get to vote on the presidency, the Speaker would annul the votes of 63 million Americans. And I think that takes American politics to a new low."
Reporter: You don't think those comments were disrespectful at all about the most powerful woman in the history of the United States?
Kennedy: I didn't mean 'em as disrespectful. I didn't mean 'em as disrespectful at all. If people think they're disrespectful, this is America, you're entitled to your opinion.
