MONROE, La. (KNOE) - SQ's on the Ouachita closed its doors without any warning leaving customers out in the cold. That includes anyone who paid a deposit for services not yet rendered and anyone who has a gift card
It was revealed over the weekend that the restaurant/event host in Downtown Monroe will not reopen.
Kristyn Wakefield is a week away from her wedding shower, and she planned to have it at SQ's on the Ouachita.
"That kind of hurt, but it is what it is at this point," Wakefield says.
The restaurant canceled all private parties and left customers with worthless gift cards. Customers like Bonnie Guidry who says she's mad.
"I spent 250-dollars on gift cards. He [the manager] didn't give me a reason. he just simply said he didn't know what could be done about refunds if anything," Guidry says.
After our original piece aired Monday, the following message was posted on SQ's Facebook page: "For all those who purchased gift cards in the last month or so, please IM me (Brian Eskew) so we can discuss. I assure you, there was no plan to close nor to take your money for a gift card and close up. God Bless."
SQ's took the place of River and Rail and was trying to be a staple in downtown Monroe. It's a part of the city people like Councilman Mike Echols are trying to revitalize. He says this is just a part of doing business.
"It's an important property. It's on the river. It's got tons of potential, so I'm highly optimistic that there will be other tenants in the future that fill that space and we'll see another restaurant there," Echols says.
Echols says SQ's was just one part of a bigger plan.
"With the new residential [area] that's coming in and several new restaurants and some new retail that are coming, I think 2018 is gonna be bright for a year, if not brighter than 2017." Echols says.
However, for now, Guidry is out of $250, and Wakefield has only one week to replan her celebration.
We reached out to the owners of SQ's, but haven't heard back yet.
There is still no word on why the restaurant closed.
