Ruston man hoping to break world record for biggest rubber band ball
For Will Love, what he loves is rubber bands.
"Well I started out in middle school, making one, just toying around with it," Love said. "I got that one to about 50 pounds. Then, fell off with it, didn't go back to it."
He fell off for 11 years. Then, last March...
"I figured why not pick it back up, see if I can get the record."
The record he's talking about, is the Guinness World Record, one that, right now, sits at over 4000 kilograms, or 9000 pounds.
Once Love set his sights on the record, he called Alliance Rubber Bands, an Arkansas company. They sponsored him, and sent him his first batch of bands.
From there, Love got to work.
"I started out working a little bit at a time, in the evenings when I get off of work, wrapping them, and wrapping them. And then, the regular ones wouldn't fit on there. So, I had to start tying them together and chain them to the ball."
And how Will makes the chains is real easy, just a bunch of loop knots. Once the chains are made, Love ties them, and rolls them on the big ball.
Right now, it sits at 200 pounds, quite a ways from the record. But, he says he'll make it to 9000, because he's always wanted to.
"It's something I've been dreaming about since i was a little kid," Love said. "It might not mean much to some people. They'll say, 'Hey, that's just a big waste of time. It's just a big ball of rubber bands.' But, to me, it's something I've always wanted to do. It's special to me."
A dream made with an elastic heart.
