A musical theatre play is underway in Ruston. The play is called “Junie B. Jones Jr.,” a play based on one of Barbara Park’s children’s books.

Musical director Tami Alexander says the play is a great learning opportunity for students that tells a wonderful story about Junie.

Elena, who is one of the actresses, will play Junie B. Jones in the upcoming musical. Elena describes Jones as a young girl who is beginning the first grade. Through her time she goes through new adventures and writes down her journey in a special journal.

This year’s play will showcase 44 students. The musical will feature a variety of tones from jazz to hip hop.

Alexander says the process to prepare for “Junie B. Jones Jr.” has been an amazing experience and hopes the play will encourage more students to join theatre. “We try to make this part of the community and make this a community event that would bring up more students in the theatre.”

The play is set to begin Saturday, February 25, at Ruston Community Theatre. Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for students.
