They recommend that people make an emergency kit with at least a gallon of water per person per day, non-perishable food items, and a battery-powered radio.

They say it's important to stay informed and listen to either the media or your local officials for information.

"Really, it's those three easy steps: build a kit, make a plan, and stay informed," said Stephanie Wagner of Red Cross of Louisiana. "And just keep an eye on neighbors to make sure that they're prepped and they're ready as well."

She recommended that people bring a map, as GPS services may not always be available.

She also recommended bringing your medication, as prescriptions may be hard to fill during a storm.

According to Wagner, the American Red Cross has already started moving supplies to centralized locations across the state so that they would be ready to move materials wherever they are needed.
