WEST MONROE, La. (KNOE) - A West Monroe man has been charged with attempted second-degree murder after being accused of aggressively attacking a woman with an axe.

According to West Monroe police, the axe attack happened Monday night outside a house on Parent Street.

Police say the victim told them that she was sitting in a car when Anthony Wayne Powell came up to her with an axe and started yelling that he was going to kill her.

Powell allegedly used the weapon to break the car windows, opened the door, and yanked the victim out of the car before hitting her repeatedly with the axe.

Police say Powell hit the victim in her abdomen and legs as she fell to the ground. They say he then began kicking her.

According to police, the victim and a witness say Powell kept telling the victim he was going to kill her during the attack.

Powell's bond is set at $500,000.

Police did not say what kind of axe was used in the attack or with which part of the axe the victim was struck.
