Ouachita Parish Mosquito Abatement warning folks about West Nile
The Ouachita Parish Mosquito Abatement is urging residents to take measures to deal with mosquitoes during hurricane season.
Director Shannon Rider said that hurricane season can bring more standing pools of water, which she said can bring both pros and cons.
Rider said more pools of water can help mosquitoes spread out instead of clumping in the same place. She said this can prevent the spread of diseases like West Nile. But Rider also said that more pools of water can mean more "nuisance" mosquitoes.
"So sometimes there's no winning. We're battling West Nile mosquitoes or we're battling nuisance mosquitoes," said Rider.
She recommended residents wear bug spray and long sleeves to avoid being bitten.
