OUACHITA PARISH, La. (KNOE) - Thousands of dogs and cats have been taken in by our local animal shelter this year.
According to the Ouachita Parish Animal Shelter, they have taken in more than 3,000 animals as of Tuesday afternoon. The count was at 2,051 dogs, 988 cats, and 69 other animals (though the number will have surely risen by the time you see this.)
Animal advocates say the best way to ensure that helpless cats and dogs don't end up in a shelter is to spay and & neuter your pets. Unwanted & accidental litters contribute greatly to cat and dog overpopulation. If you need financial help to spay or neuter your pet, please contact Paws of Northeast Louisiana.
Ouachita Parish Animal Shelter is a governmental agency under the Ouachita Parish Police Jury. The agency is responsible for protecting the public safety and health as associated with domestic and wild animals. O.P.A.S. accepts strays and owner turn-ins.
