BATON ROUGE, La. (KNOE) - The Louisiana State Fire Marshal is trying to build a permanent home for the "Spirit of Louisiana" fire truck.

"The Spirit" was built through donations from the louisiana citizens for the new york city fire department after it lost dozens of firetrucks in the 9-11 attacks.

Officials say it’s a proud moment in louisiana history.

Four years later, New York returned the favor, returning the Spirit of Louisiana to its home state. The firetruck's service didn't stop there, finding its way to Long Island, New York, after Hurricane Sandy hit the east coast.

Now that it's served, it's now time for the truck to rest, to preserve its history. This final home, which will be a replica fire house, will serve as a tribute to both fire departments in New York and New Orleans.

It will also give people the chance to learn about its journey. To do this, officials are asking for help, specifically donations, to build the Spirit of Louisiana the home they say it deserves.
