OPPJ declares state of emergency, names interim juror

OUACHITA PARISH, La. (KNOE) - Ouachita Parish Police Jury President Shane Smiley signed an emergency declaration after Monday night’s meeting in wake of potential severe weather.

After visiting with the Governor’s Office, Homeland Security, and Emergency Management, Smiley felt it was important to file the declaration. By signing this, any money spent of flood recovery could be reimbursed by the state. He says this is the first step to help prepare and stay ahead of any flooding or big rain event in the future.

Smiley says a full list of sandbag location will be released at noon on Tuesday. As of now, they have already confirmed locations at the Ike Hamilton Expo Center and the Old Saint Francis Hospital. A third location is yet to be determined.

The declaration will be filed Tuesday morning.

The parish also appointed a new juror at Monday’s meeting to fill Pat Moore’s vacant seat.

Anna Reed will serve the remainder of Moore’s term.

Reed, who’s been a candidate for the school board in the past, says she won’t seek this job in the upcoming election. The council felt that was a necessary requirement to make sure no one has a leg up for that election.
