DELHI, La. (KNOE) - On Thursday, the Richland Parish Sheriff along with the Delhi Police Department responded to a train accident in Delhi.

Sheriff Gary Gilley said the accident happened around 10 a.m. near Highway 80 and Depot Street.

Gilley said an 18-wheeler was hit by a Kansas City Southern train. He said the driver was crossing the tracks but got stuck in traffic and could not move forward. Gilley said the train smashed into the back of the trailer.

No injuries were reported, but Gilley said drivers should be more alert.

"The thing is with these 18-wheelers crossing these tracks they need to make sure they can get their whole truck across the tracks before they stop, he said. "Because you never know when a train coming and you don't have that much time to get off the tracks. And what I want to say is just be very careful at these railroad crossings."

The 18-wheeler was owned by Sapa, an aluminum company located blocks away from where the accident happened.
