New arena could be in the works in Monroe
"There's not a week that goes by were someone is not asking me for the last five years when are you going to do it, well we are pulling the trigger now," says Mayor Jamie Mayo.
A new arena is in the works. The Monroe Civic Center was built back in the 60s and Mayo says it's outdated and causing the city to lose events.
"It'll be almost double the size of the old one, this will be a 21st century arena or event center and it will create an entertainment district, which is what we are looking to do," says Mayo.
She says a feasablity study was Phase One and they have also narrowed the new location down to three sites and now moving to Phase Two.
"We still don't know where the site is the professional that will come in in this second phase will determine that they will also determine what the proposal to fund it and it will be public private partnership," says Mayo.
The new arena is expected to have a capacity of 10,000. On Tuesday an ordinance will go before the city council for the second phase of the project, which will allow the architects to design it..
"Then they will go talk to companies like CenturyLink, Chase, Vantage, Gardner Denver Thomas in terms of naming rights, and so forth, once they do that they will present it all back to the council," says Mayo.
He says it's not just about creating a new arena, but creating more opportunities for Downtown and all over to bring in more events and people.
