Monroe man accused of trying to set girlfriend's home on fire

MONROE, La. (KNOE) - Authorities have arrested a man accused of strangling his girlfriend, trying to set her home on fire, and then taking her car.

According to the Monroe Police Department, 37-year-old Calvin Bernard Hamilton was arrested on February 9, 2020, after a disturbance in the 100 block of Stacy Drive.

The victim told police Hamilton choked her and she lost consciousness. Police say Hamilton also cut the victim's hand.

They say the victim stated that she was afraid Hamilton would kill her.

Police say Hamilton also attempted to burn the victim’s home by setting some bedding on fire.

Officers say Hamilton also took the victim’s car keys and drove away in the vehicle. They say he returned while they were on the scene and was placed under arrest. Police say Hamilton became combative during his arrest.

According to the arrest report, Hamilton was booked into the Ouachita Correctional Center and charged with resisting an officer, unauthorized use of a movable, aggravated arson, aggravated battery, and battery of a dating partner (strangulation.)
