The Monroe Police Department has made an arrest in the Monroe Civic Center shooting that happened over the weekend.

Monroe Police have arrested 24-year old Jaterrious Godfrey on second degree murder. Godfrey was arrested around 1 a.m. Monday. He's also being charged with possessing a firearm by a convicted felon.

Six people were shot at the Civic Center Sunday around 1:30 a.m. Two of them died.

Monroe police are expected to release more details about the incident and Godfrey's arrest at a news conference Tuesday morning.

Nearly 3,000 people gathered at the civic center Saturday night
for an early 4th of July celebration, but according to Monroe Police, that celebration ended in gunfire.

Monroe Police responded to a call about a fight in the North parking lot of the Monroe Civic Center at 1:30 Sunday morning.

"And as they were on their way to the fight, gunshots were fired," says Monroe Police Chief Quentin Holmes.

Chief Holmes says when they arrived, two men were dead and and three were injured.

He says this incident involved two groups of men.

"The two groups of men knew each other, so this was not random," says Holmes.

Chief Holmes says they've encountered these men before and
says it's helping to speed up the process of the investigation.

"We do have some promising leads," says Holmes. "I can say that with confidence. It's just a matter of getting all the pieces together
to be able to bring the suspect in and have probable cause to make the arrest."
