UPDATE: Arrest made in Monroe shooting death at North 19th & Flynn

MONROE, La. (KNOE) - UPDATE: Monroe Police arrested Rodrigues Bynum for the shooting death of James Mercer. Bynum was charged with second-degree murder.

The Monroe Police Department is investigating the death of a man who was found deceased a few blocks from North 18th Street.

Wednesday morning, police wrapped crime scene tape around part of a yard at North 19th & Flynn Street. When we arrived, a small tent or tarp was set up inside the taped off area between two houses.

Police would only confirm that they are "working an investigation involving a black male found deceased in the 1900 block of Flynn."

People who live in the area told us they heard gunshots around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.

KNOE reporter Courtney Cole saw multiple bullet casings on the ground when she arrived.

McFarland Funeral Home removed the body from the yard around 10:15 a.m.

Police have given us no other information regarding this incident.

The scene is just a couple of blocks away from one of the busiest intersections in Monroe: North 18th & Desiard Street.
