MONROE, La. (KNOE) - Medicare open enrollment period is coming to a close. People have until Friday, December 7 to sign up or make changes to their plans.
Open enrollment is the only time you can make changes to your Medicare plan, so experts want to make sure people are enrolling correctly.
They say the key is to review all of your prescription drugs. There are lists online that show which drugs are covered by each plan. They say it's important to know that Medicare plans are based on an individual's needs and there's no one plan that works for everyone.
They also add that even if you already have a plan and your prescriptions haven't changed, the drug coverage for each plan could.
They say that's why it's important to review your plan every year, and if it gets confusing you should always ask questions.
"Don’t get overwhelmed by your Medicare choices,” says John Whittemore from Blue Cross and Blue Shield. “Reach out to friends and family members who are on Medicare to find out what they like about their plans. When you're ready to enroll, an agent or broker will guide you through the process."
Everyone over the age of 65 is required to have Medicare or some kind of private insurance. If you don’t, you forfeit your social security benefits.
