MONROE, La. (KNOE) - Local businessman Matt Parker is running for the District 35 state senate seat.
Local businessman Matt Parker is running for the District 35 state senate seat.
Parker said he's been campaigning for over a year now on a platform that prioritizes education, jobs, and improvements to our roads.
"There's a lot more to it than a college degree," said Parker. "It doesn't do any good to have the best-educated people in Louisiana, or in the country if we don't have a job for them when they get educated."
Parker said he was also putting an emphasis on bringing skilled laborers to the state.
As the owner of a body shop, Parker thinks his experience as a business owner gives him a leg up over the competition.
"One of the things that we will make sure of is we don't spend more money than we make. You just can't do that," he said. "I can't do that in my business. If I spend more money than I make, then I'm not gonna be in business very long."
The other two candidates running for the position are the incumbent Jim Fannin, and State Rep. Jay Morris.
