MONROE, La. (KNOE) Louisiana first lady Donna Edwards was in Monroe Wednesday morning to tour Ouachita Jr. High School, and their music and arts programs.
It's part of the First Lady's initiative called, "Teaching MAM - music, arts, and movement."
She walked the halls and got a performance each step of the way - from the school's art students, band, dance team, and choir.
Edwards says it's important for schools to teach the arts because it makes for more well-rounded students.
"That [the arts], to me, is educating the whole child," she said. "And, I think sometimes we forget, that music, arts, and movement really enhance the other core subjects, like science and math. And those are great, but we really need to get back to educating the whole child in my opinion."
