Local stores starting to hire for the holiday season

MONROE, LA. (KNOE) - It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas here in Ouachita Parish. Stores locally are already starting to hire seasonal employees. Chain stores like Dicks Sporting Goods and Target in Monroe already have job openings on their website.

Stage hosted a job fair today from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. looking for seasonal employees. People applied online, and corporate sent Jason Green, West Monroe Stage Manager, a list of more than forty applicants. "Starting earlier in October and bringing those people in pretty far in advance of the Black Friday season gives you time to train them and make sure you have the right people,” says Green. “I think holding an event like this, which we've been doing the last 4-5 years, is pretty important."

Green recently hired Ansell Jordan for a seasonal position with the West Monroe Stage store, and Jordan says it’s the perfect job for him. "Well I need extra money especially for being a student, so it's a great opportunity for me to do that, and I love the holidays, and Christmas and customer service,” says Jordan. He’s worked in retail before and knows how important the holiday season is to a store. "Seasonal is important for retail especially because during the holidays it becomes busier and you need people to be in a lot more places,” says Jordan.

The Louisiana Workforce Commission says the holiday season is so essential for a store’s success and UPS and Target are already looking at hiring more seasonal employees than they did last year. "Target they intend to hire an additional 120,000 employees, and that's a 20% increase from last year,” says Jacques Lasseigne, and Industry Sector Coordinator for the Commission.

Lasseigne says most stores locally will hire a seasonal workforce just like the big chain stores. "Any general mall in North Louisiana, most of the retail establishments will hire 1-5 new people just for the holiday season."

For Stage, they’re competing with the online market and want to make the best impression on customers to keep them coming back. "We want to have the best people standing at the door to greet you, to assist you while you're shopping, to ring you up and send you on your way,” says Green.
