(CNN) - The death certificate for Playboy founder Hugh Hefner reveals the media mogul died from heart failure after battling E. coli and a severe blood infection.

Hefner died Thursday at his home, The Playboy Mansion, in Beverly Hills, Ca.

He was known as a media icon who founded Playboy Magazine in 1953.

Hefner's widow, Crystal Hefner, called him an "American hero and pioneer."

She says Hefner was laid to rest over the weekend at the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery next to Marilyn Monroe, the first Playboy cover model.
