Gold Star Family Tax Relief Act and Paid Family Leave

MONROE, La (KNOE) - Sen. Bill Cassidy joined us in studio to talk about the Gold Star Family Tax Relief Act. The bipartisan bill would give a tax break for children receiving benefits who have lost a parent serving in the military. Cassidy calls this move 'the least' he can do to further protect the families of those who paid the ultimate price. He says, "We give benefits to those children. They don't have a parent. They lost their parent. But maybe society can help them get a little bit of a leg up because they lost that parent serving our country."
Other supporters of the bill include Democratic Senator Doug Jones, Republican Senator Pat Toomey and 26 other bipartisan senators.

The Senator also discussed the "Paid Family Leave Bill". He's working with Democratic Senator Kyrsten Sinema to author the bill. Cassidy is also a doctor, and says its important for mothers to have time to care for newborns. To help pay for it, Republicans plan to take money from social security to reimburse employers so they can afford to give the families extra time off. Cassidy says, "Not every employer can afford to give family leave. We're trying to work so that every employer has the ability to grant their employee family leave and that their employee can afford to take a little bit of time off. We think it pays back to the child, to the family and to society much more than we'll put into it."

The bill is currently going through the senate.
