Feed Your Soul: Grace Place Soup Kitchen

MONROE, La (KNOE) ”Let us be a light to these people today and share your word with them.”

Volunteers from a FirstWest Life Group prepare and serve lunch at Grace Place Soup Kitchen

Before the first meal is served at Grace Place Soup Kitchen in Monroe, hearts are primed. On this day, a Life Group from First Baptist Church West Monroe prays and comes in hours early to prepare today’s lunch.

“They come here with the ingredients. They cook it. Serve it. And clean it up. We have many youth groups that come during the summer especially. Sunday School groups, civic groups, businesses,” said Rhonda Grace, Founder, and CEO of Grace Place Ministries.

The volunteer chefs don’t just empty cans into warming tray. They want the food to be good. The free lunch, or 1 dollar if you can spare it, is served Monday, Wednesday, and Friday by a different group.

“I just enjoy working with people, serving people. It’s fun,” said Johnny Konkale, a member of a First West Life Group, who volunteers at Grace Place Soup Kitchen.

Rhonda Grace started Grace Place to minister to prostitutes and drug addicts in 2000. Her original plan didn’t include a soup kitchen.
“God just said feed the people and He knows I’ll say yes. But I told Him I didn’t want to but I do it anyway.”

On average, there are around 4,000 meals served each month. Each tray filled with hearty food and food for the heart.

Those who do whatever needs to be done in the kitchen, know the point is to not only satisfy an appetite for food but a hunger for something more.

“Even if we don’t get to pray with someone I believe that just the presence of God in this place is touching hearts whether we see it or not,” said Grace.

“Let’s give them hope and we ask all this in Jesus name amen.”
There’s also a clothes closet at Grace Place. And this time of year they try to help kids with school uniforms and back to school supplies.
