DELHI, La. (KNOE 8 News) - With free school supplies and free hair cuts, kids in Delhi are getting ready for the new school year.

"It's an effort by the lodge, but the community made it happen," says Patrick Stubblefield, a member of Delhi Lodge.

Members of Delhi Lodge know sending the kids back to school can be expensive, so they've started a Back to School Bash, to help parents and their pocketbooks.

"Oh...several hundred dollars...yes...Several hundred dollars," says Tanishia Jones, a mother of two.

Jones says she spends a lot to send her kids to school each year and today's school bash is helping her save money.
However, parents aren't the only ones getting to cut back.

"Schools usually have to pick the shortage of school supplies, so this will help our school to be able to put money in other places," says Shelly Crawford, principal of Delhi Elementary School.

Mayor Jesse Washington says the back to school bash is a good way to introduce people to the new recreation center.

"This will be for after school, where parents can bring their kids who need help and they can get tutoring," says Washington.

He says hopefully that will help improve grades, and put those new school supplies to work.

"We may not get everything they need, but they have the basics to get them started," says Washington.

"You can't make them learn, but if they got the tools to work with, I think they'll be more confident and they will do a better job," says Stubblefield.
