CALDWELL PARISH, La. (KNOE) - "I said, 'Oh my God,' because I didn't hear a shot; I didn't hear nothing," Unamae Graham said.

That's how Graham reacted when she first heard about Monday night's deadly shooting. She's lived off Pension Hill Rd. for more than 20 years. She says the news shocked her for a few reasons.

"This is a quiet place up here," Graham said. "It's mostly senior citizens that live around here, and it's just a quiet neighborhood."

Graham isn't the only one confused. Others in the neighborhood say they had no idea what happened til hours later.

"What transpired... I don't have a clue," Glenn Roberts said.

KNOE obtained a copy of the arrest affidavit Wednesday morning. According to the report, the shooting happened around 9:15pm Monday night at the suspect, Mark Scott's home on Pension Hill Rd. According to the report, Scott told police he shot Joey Varnell in the chest with a .410 caliber shotgun after an argument on Scott's front porch. The Caldwell Parish Coroner pronounced Varnell dead at the scene.

Neighbors tell KNOE these two men knew each other well.

"The two boys grew up together," Roberts said. "They grew up. They both lived in Ward 5. You know, to grow up together, hang out together when you're teenagers or whatever, and then all of a sudden one of them shoots the other, it's unbelievable."

As the crime tape still waves in the wind at Scott's home, the people who live in the neighborhood are still trying to figure out why something like this could've happened.

"I hate it though," Graham said. "That's sad that things get so bad that you do something like that."

"What transpired between those two men to cause one of them to do something to the other one?" Roberts asked.

Caldwell Parish Sheriff Clay Bennett said there was no motive in the shooting.
