MONROE, La. (KNOE) - Marie Brown has helped many young women through her mentorship program "Girls Rock" over the past few years, but this year she's opening it up to boys. Saturday, December 21st, they're kicking off "Boys Rock 2".
Marie Brown from the Primary Health Clinic talks about Boys Rock 2 mentorship event focused on mentoring young men ages 5 to 18.
Brown says they already have 200 young men signed up, and the goal of the program is to have a group of male mentors meet with the boys once a month. She says she hopes those mentors will continue to mentor the same group of young men throughout their lives.
Boys rock 2 will focus on boys ages 5 to 18.
Brown says she hopes to work with the Monroe Housing Authority to seek mentors because many of the young men live in those areas.
Brown hopes the program can help get young men off the street and show them a positive way to live their lives.
At the kick-off event, they'll hand out Christmas gifts as well, so they're asking for donations of things like basketballs, footballs, and board games to keep the boys active and energetic.
You can drop off donations at the SD Hill Clinic at 850 S 2nd Street, Monroe, LA 71202.
The boys will get a free meal and a visit from Santa handing out toys at the kick-off event. The kick-off starts at 10 a.m. in the Primary Health Services Center at 2913 Desiard Street, Monroe, LA 71201.
It's not too late to sign up as a part of the program or as a mentor. Call Marie Brown at (318) 381-0028 for more information.
