The Ouachita Parish Sheriff has confirmed a deputy was shot in the line of duty on Saturday night.

Sheriff Jay Russell says right before 8:00pm Saturday night, the sheriff's office received multiple calls about gunshots at the intersection of Miller St. and Deloach St. in South Monroe.

Russell says the deputy was working a four-wheeler theft when he was shot through his patrol unit. Russell says the bullet hit the deputy in his back, but because he was wearing his bulletproof vest, the bullet ricocheted off the vest and landed in the back seat of the patrol unit.

His partner took him to the hospital to be evaluated. Russell says the deputy will undergo a precautionary x-ray but should be okay.

Right now, there is no suspect. Russell says there were several people at the intersection where the shooting took place.

Russell says OPSO is working together with Monroe Police and West Monroe Police to solve the crime.
