When it comes to modern technology and logging in personal information through digital devices, scammers have more opportunities to steal personal information than ever.

Recently scammers have been targeting Dish Network customers online or through text for personal information. A new text message scam is disguising itself as a FedEx notification. Even Facebook has reported problems with ransomware.

Joann Deal from the Better Business Bureau of Monroe joined us Monday morning to warn about the importance of having security on all digital devices to avoid getting scammed.

Deal says with the social security scam going on, it's important to be careful about giving out any personal information. It's important to only make transactions with secure websites. Deal also says to be aware of warnings from robocalls.

If you receive a text message from Dish Network imposters, or from FedEx asking for delivering preferences along with payment method, you're opening Pandora’s box. Responding or clicking on links could lead to phone takeovers.

Lastly, Deal added whenever possible, work with local resources.
