MONROE, La. (KNOE) - Louisiana Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients will get their benefits early again, according to the Louisiana Department of Children & Family Services. They say all benefits for March will be issued on either March 1st or 2nd.
Everyone who normally gets their benefits between the 1st and 4th of each month should now get their March benefits on March 1, 2019. These people include households classified as elderly or disabled.
Everyone who normally gets their benefits between the 5th and the 14th of each month will get their March benefits on March 2, 2019.
The early issuance is due in part to the government shutdown in January. Since February benefits were issued in mid-January, families have had to make those funds last longer than usual. The dept. says moving up March's issuance will help ease the burden on affected households.
"This extended period between SNAP issuances has been challenging for SNAP recipients, about 66 percent of whom are elderly, disabled or children," DCFS Secretary Marketa Garner Walters said.
DCFS says that should there be another government shutdown, March SNAP benefits will not be affected.
