MONROE, La. (KNOE) - On Thanksgiving Day, the American Medical Response of Monroe transported six wheel-chair bound patients home to be with their families.
With the project, called “Home for the Holiday,” AMR donates six round trip wheelchair services on Thanksgiving Day for selected nursing home patients, to and from their family residences within Ouachita
Parish. The nursing homes selected the participating patients earlier this month. Geneva Watson was selected from the Landmark Nursing Facility.
"I'm very excited about going out, I don't get to go out often," Watson said,
Last Thanksgiving, Watson had a stroke, which left her family surrounding her in a hospital rather than the dinner table. Watson said she is ready to home to do things she enjoys like, "Walking around in the yard and through the house..it's very exciting to me just to be at home."
Tim Houghton, EMS Chief, AMR Monroe, said, “Anyone who has been away from home during Thanksgiving knows the longing that comes with missing that special time with the family. With this project, AMR helps a few elders go home for that great tradition.”
This is the 25th year AMR has conducted the project in Ouachita Parish.
Houghton said, “AMR’s paramedics and EMTs look forward to this project every year. Our crews often build personal relationships with nursing facility staffs and their residents, sometimes providing care in situations stressful for all.
Houghton said, “Home for the Holiday” allows their dispatchers and crews to interact with facility staffs, their residents and the residents’ families in a warm light.
