15 mosquito pools test positive for West Nile in Ouachita Parish

Monroe, La According to local health officials, fifteen mosquito pools, representing fourteen locations, tested positive for West Nile virus in Ouachita Parish.
These mosquito pools were collected 17-22 July. The locations of these pools are in the following locations:

Monroe: Between the Ouachita River and South Grand St., near I-20 and Orange Street, near Lakeshore Subdivision, and between the Ouachita River and Forsythe Avenue, near River Oaks Subdivision, and in the Garden District

Richwood: Near Richwood Road No. 1

West Monroe: Between West Monroe High School and First Baptist Church of WM (2), and near Hidden Hills Subdivision

Southwestern Ouachita Parish: Between Hwy.34 and Caples Road, and in the Mount Vernon area

Southeastern Ouachita Parish: Near the southern portion of Prairie Road

Calhoun: Near the intersection of I-20 and Hwy. 80

Bawcomville: Near Smith Street

All affected areas are to be treated aerially Sunday (July 30) and Monday (July 31.)

When working outdoors, particularly during the evening, everyone should take personal protective measures. These measures include wearing a long-sleeved shirt, long pants and the use of an EPA approved repellant. Repellant should be applied to exposed skin and on thin clothing because mosquitoes can bite through thin clothing. Care should be taken to ensure that water holding containers are emptied to deny mosquitoes a place to breed in your neighborhood.
